ANGELINA HELIOTI

ABOUT

My name is Angelina Helioti. I was born in Sparta and grew up in a town in Laconia, Vlachioti. My origin is from Arcadia.

In February 2022 I completed my studies at the School of Architecture of the National Technical University of Athens. Since I was a child, Athens fascinated me with its night lights, its historical center and its contrasts. But in the summer of 2021, I found myself looking for a different way of life, which the urban environment could not offer me. The natural landscape, the calm rhythms of life and the fresh air are things I was looking for.

I made the decision to leave the city and live in a mountain village in Arcadia, Stemnitsa, and later I moved to Vytina. There I studied silversmithing, the traditional art of the place. The landscape and the quietness in the embrace of nature gave me inspiration for all my artistic pursuits. Writing, photography, painting and jewelry making, they will all find here as you browse the pages of this blog.

The articles are of a diary nature about my stay in Mainalo, which lasted three years. But you can also find reports with snapshots from my various trips in Greece or abroad.

Mainalo – The holy rage

Good evening and have a good week!

The weekend was really heavy with rain and fog here. On Friday, however, the weather was excellent!

With my company from the school of silversmithing, we thought of hiking to the top of Mainalo, Ostrakina. The altitude of the summit is 1981 meters and the walking route is quite easy, around one to one and a half hours. On such a beautiful and warm day, the mountain excursion was just what we needed to recharge our batteries.

We started with the cars from Stemnitsa and drove to Tripoli and then to the ski resort. As I was going there for the first time, I couldn’t wait to see what the natural scenery would look like, what the ski slopes would be like without snow, and what the view from the top of the mountain would be like. We left the cars near the shelter, filled our water bottles and started to hike.

After about fifteen minutes of walking, the first beautiful views towards the various points of the horizon began to appear. The whole scenery was so beautifully bucolic, the company relaxed and carefree. Slowly, each at his own pace and with some breaks, we moved forward. We had with us the two dogs of the company, Summer and Noda. They were both so happy that they went out into nature for a long walk. Ready to explore! The “moms” Elina and Eva did great with the challenge of holding them by the leash the whole way.

As I write now and look at the photos, I remember the landscape from up there, but also the various paths I have walked in Mainalo. I can justify some things in my head now. It explains the fact that “Mainalo” in ancient Greek means holy fury, i.e. the divine allegory that wild nature brings. From this mountain began the worship of the god Pan, by the Arcadians. It is a beautiful mountain and really worth exploring.

During the hike I spent many moments alone. Whether they were in front or further back, I tried to keep my fellow travelers relatively far away from me so that I could take pictures of them, even with the telephoto lens. Like the next picture, when I called Ismeni from afar and as soon as she turned to look at me, this result came out. This photo reminds me of something from old movies. A cute girl among the ears of corn.

In the group, all were very discreet and calm, but without losing the team spirit at all. As if we all needed to get in touch with the mountain and ourselves. The place was all ours, there was no one else around. Perhaps this played a part in the fact that we experienced this visit as healing. Of course, the beautiful view of the neighboring mountains and the fresh air contributed to this.

When we reached the top we took our time to calm down, eat dry food and then chatted about various topics… Some rowed, towards the tops of the surrounding mountains, Artemisium, Aorania and Erymanthos, Lycaeus, Taygetus and Parnonas.

Others lay on the grass and others stayed for a few minutes with their eyes closed. The place was silent, except for the breeze blowing our hair.

Two birds probably hawks or crows, I’m not sure, they flew close to us quite low and I ran to catch them with the camera. They were very imposing and seemed so free and autonomous. Wild birds are incredible, so precious and beautiful. Their nobility and power are enviable.

Let me be on the job! I was drawn to Ioanna, fortunately because I usually get absorbed behind the camera, I always take pictures of others and I often don’t have any image of me.

Before we left we took commemorative photos under the Greek flag. I set up the tripod with the timer counting down and ran to the spot the kids had reserved for me. It was a relaxed and genuine moment with no frills…

I shall never forget these images of the light falling so tenderly upon the figures as we left the summit behind us.

On the way down it was quite slippery and I even thought of various bad scenarios of falling down and risking hitting the camera… Until I actually slipped just before the end, but luckily the camera was not harmed, it was more like a gentle slide. And I wasn’t the only one who slipped away from my company, so watch out if any of you hike there.

Hiking is a wonderful sport, with many health benefits, both physical and mental. The more one climbs mountains, the more one’s endurance improves. So if you are near a mountain, even if you live in cities, I suggest you give it a try!

Finding the winter rhythm (?)

Hello my friends.

Everyday life here is starting to flow and we are heading towards winter. Trying to find my winter rhythm again. But there are so many things I want and need to fit into the day and I still struggle to find the right time for everything. This year I want to do both photography and video making, but even more jewelry making and painting. At the same time I have to exercise and do some physical therapy exercises for the back. And there are more… Several things that when it gets dark and I start to get sleepy I realize that I didn’t have time to do them. I imagine many of you have felt something similar. I try to make a schedule, but for quite some time certain activities absorbed me more than others, which took a back seat.

As if this personal difficulty of mine was not enough, yesterday we were suddenly informed that there will be changes in the school of silversmithing, mainly in the management and perhaps also in the teaching staff. It is a bit confusing situation, we are all waiting for the arrival of the new director with the new week and slowly we will find out how things will develop. Yesterday the small community of the school was somewhat shocked, as within a moment and where we said that we had energetically started the lessons, everything was turned upside down. Now is one of those times when you just wait and can’t do anything.

Even though many of us were upset, something very beautiful happened. Despite the cold, we sat down students and professors to drink in the square of Stemnitsa. This was a long time coming. We became a big group and talked until late. Yesterday I felt grateful for the fact that I am here and have met so many beautiful people. Gratitude for the fact that this school exists, here in the forest in this fairytale village. When something unexpected happens in our life, it comes to remind us of the value of what we have.

Days like this, when I feel there are enough burdens and worries, I go for a walk without destination, with the camera and the tripod. With instinct stretched I head where I feel comfortable going and hang out with the most loyal friend. Nature. A short walk through the narrows of Stemnitsa, which ends just outside it among the trees and bushes. Until I get to the point where something looks interesting and then I stand and photograph.

I walk the cobbled streets and look at the courtyards of houses that have begun to deteriorate. This moment of solitude, among the plants and ruins of another era, offers a sweet peace. A lot of times I don’t even need to have music on headphones with me because it will ruin it. It’s nice with nature sounds. The rustle of the breeze, the leaves crunching under my shoes, a bird passing over the village…

Finally, in this period I feel as if the adaptation phase has been prolonged for me. I’m still trying to get my groove on I thought I was about to screw up with this one. But for some reason I like it. In these moments when things suddenly change, you feel that you are indeed alive. Life is unpredictable anyway, we just take things for granted. All crises and upheavals should be wake-up calls for us, waking us up from the lethargy in which we are, and in which we think that tomorrow will be certain. We have no idea what tomorrow will be like. And it’s good to start saying thank you from today for what we have. That’s how I see it. What do you say?

I will update you in a few days.

Thank you so much for visiting the blog again.

Hugs!
